Fowler’s October 4 fragments: the representation the agent edits is part of the supervision system
Read October 5, 2026. Martin Fowler’s October 4 fragments assemble two distinct ideas: inferential assistants cannot be repaired like a single deterministic bug, and human-readable conceptual models may matter more, not less, if models generate the lower-level code. His contrast is not a comparative experiment. The same entry also covers unrelated political news and model-rank speculation; do not pool those as evidence of software-team outcomes.
Original arguments checked. Sam Ruby’s September 25 essay takes an actual Rails application, compiles it to C, and compares source representations (~60,000 Rails app tokens versus ~4 million generated C tokens; the C includes compiled framework, so these are not like-for-like code-size measures). Twenty Rails lines mention one domain concept versus 1,220 generated C lines. Ruby argues that a compact conventional Rails model can preserve the decisions, give an agent context and be compiled to a lower level, whereas a prompt detailed and repeatable enough to regenerate the same program amounts to another programming language. This is an inspectable representation comparison, not a measured agent success experiment: no paired agent repairs or human review minutes. Unmesh Joshi’s May 12 essay argues that code is both machine instructions and a domain model, and that names, types, executable invariants and shared vocabulary serve as the model’s context. Fowler’s point is narrower than ‘keep all code human-written’: store intent in a representation that can be reviewed and evolved.
Connection: the coordinator’s memory chain needs a compact, trustworthy representation of decision and change; compare Alex’s drifting router and Belz’s false tests before claiming the notation itself fixes correctness. If posted later, use Ruby’s original short argued essay rather than another roundup, and first ask whether the still-unread October features clear. Held back: October 5 Monday feed already contains three unread area posts and one mandatory subscription post.
